Woke up to see the obituaries on my desk. Didn’t know why it was there so I skimmed it for a name…Then I spotted grammy. Figure mom put it there thinking I’d want to see it. Which I did, it’s just that well I don’t know; always kind of thought she'd always be there. Wanted to see both of them again - Now with her gone, it’s not possible.
During Tom and mom’s divorce, I stayed with Toms’ parents. They were great! Always happy, never fought, or raised their voices. Unlike the rest of my family they made me feel secure and wanted; most of all they made me feel loved.
Since mom’s dad had died before she was born; Tom’s dad was my only grandpa. He was the first one who attempted to teach me anything. And we used to play on the train set or he’d watch me play the Atari while he got the shrimp and then we’d watch TV till the plate was empty. Tho between the two of us that didn’t take long, so we upgraded to a huge basket full.
Grammy always did the cooking for all of us. Every morning she’d make me toast and smear preservatives all over it. Some things I remembered and still make for myself today, except the toast. No matter what I try or do, it never tasted like hers. Later on in my stays with them I was told of her bad back and always feared something awful would happen to her. Even went so far as to try and stop her from picking up a small toaster! Ah, the imagination of a child. Wasn’t to keen on watching her clean afterwards. Tom’s sister Debbie would pop in every so often and help out a bit. Think mom named my sister after her…
The funeral is private, so I can’t go. Don’t matter anyways; since I’m not part of the family anymore, I’m not welcome. Nobody even told me she was in the hospital…
