I have been told to quit by perfect strangers, on numerous occasions. There was one though that sticks out in my mind, mostly because it was absurd. I would like to clear up a few things and myths.
Think before you nag – You don’t just waltz up to someone like what you say is going to make a difference. It’s not realistic; you just look naive and lost in your own dream world. If you’re a non-smoker, you can only give us a non-smokers point of view. But guess what? We were all non-smoker at one point too! Not like we came out of the womb with a lit cigarette.
Ask before you continue – If you feel the need to nag us, ask if we are trying to quit, it’s offensive if we are. The crap we have to go through in our minds is enough; we don’t need you beating us on top of it.
Don’t start with all the health issues – We were taught the consequences too. Nothing anybody says is new. Don’t act like it’s the main cause of cancer. You can get cancer even if you have never been introduced to smoke. Don’t say it will cause asthma. My mother was an asthmatic, before she was a smoker; she was never around smoke. I was subject to it since the womb. I’m not an asthmatic.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying it doesn’t cause any health issues because there are tons it can. Just don’t act like it alone causes these. If you think that, maybe you should look into a health book. Everybody’s body is different. What is good for you can kill another. Here’s an example: My mother is allergic to Strawberries – So, nobody on this planet is allowed to eat Strawberries anymore. They will kill us all!
Don’t pull the ‘It doesn’t make you look cool’ line – After time, if that’s the reason we started, we don’t care if it makes us look cool. Once we NEED to smoke, it’s a matter of addition. So, if a fad started it, it sure as hell won’t end with the next one. Some of us like to smoke no matter the consequences. It’s our body, our decision.
Smokers don’t think before smoking in public – I never lit up in public, unless there was a large enough gap round me. I made sure I asked the others round me if it was ok – One ‘no’ was all it took. I’d relocate elsewhere and get my fix. It’s only the assholes that wouldn’t ask, or relocate. Assholes are like opinions, everybody’s got one – Not just smokers.
Smokers can’t smell fires or burning objects in the house – We can smell them just as well as a non-smoker. Being a smoker has nothing to do with it, burning objects have a distinct smell.
Quitting is easy – Ever heard easier said then done? Once your fully hooked, you can’t just quit. Addiction is addiction. It’s only when they catch it at the beginning that it’s easier.
Also note, some people think they are addicted but aren’t. Some are lucky and don’t get easily addicted to much.
If you’re trying to get someone to quit – Remember to support him or her. Especially if it is someone you love. When we are quitting we need a lot of support. All it takes is one doubt, hit, sense, or comment – that can make us lose our goal.
